In the early 1990s, the camp at Ain al-Helweh became a site for militant Sunni Islamists. Showing how Sunni fundamentalists took root in this Palestinian milieu, this work helps us understand how radical religious allegiances overcome traditional nationalist sentiment and how jihadi networks grab hold in communities marked by poverty and despair.
