From the author of The Cat and the City, this is a soulful, “book-within-a-book” story that serves as a love letter to Japanese culture, landscape, and literature. The narrative centers on Flo, an American translator living in Tokyo who is at a crossroads in her life—her work has dried up, and her relationship is ending.

Information about this book

Description

Everything changes when Flo finds a discarded novel called Sound of Water on the Tokyo subway. As she begins to translate it, we read the story along with her: a quiet, moving tale of Ayako, a fierce grandmother running a cafe in rural Onomichi, and her grandson Kyo, who has moved in with her after failing his medical school exams. As the seasons turn, the boundaries between the book and Flo’s real life begin to blur, leading her on a physical and emotional journey to find the elusive author and her own sense of purpose.
