Information about this book

Description

The story begins with a chilling riddle: “My mother died twice. I promised myself I would not let her story be forgotten.” The narrative follows the Toprak family, shifting between a small Kurdish village on the Euphrates and the grit of 1970s East London. Twin sisters Pembe and Jamila are born into a world where their names—meaning “Pink” and “Beautiful”—already dictate their value. While Jamila stays behind to become a respected midwife, Pembe follows her husband, Adem, to London in search of a better life.
