Description
The story is told through the eyes of a young university student in Tokyo who becomes fascinated by an older, reclusive intellectual he calls Sensei. Despite their growing friendship, Sensei remains emotionally distant, guarded by a mysterious guilt and a “shameful secret” that haunts his every move. The novel is structured in three parts, culminating in a lengthy, devastating letter from Sensei that finally reveals a past defined by romantic betrayal and the high price of individual ego. Set against the backdrop of the end of the Meiji era, the book captures a generation caught between the samurai-like honor of the past and the isolation of the modern world.
