Description
The story is narrated by an unnamed 14-year-old boy who is relentlessly bullied by his classmates because of his lazy eye. He endures the torture in “complete resignation” until he receives a secret note from a classmate, Kojima, who is also targeted by their peers. The two form a clandestine friendship, meeting in secret to share their pain and discuss their philosophies on why they are being treated this way. While the narrator searches for a logical reason to end his suffering, Kojima finds a spiritual, almost saint-like beauty in their endurance, believing their pain sets them apart from the “meaningless” world of their tormentors. The novel builds toward a confrontation that forces both to decide whether their bond is built on true friendship or merely shared terror.
