Description
The novel follows twelve central characters—mostly Black women, though not exclusively—whose lives intersect in subtle and profound ways. From Amma, a lesbian playwright staging her work at the National Theatre, to Hattie, a 93-year-old living in the rural North, the stories span different generations, sexualities, classes, and heritages. Evaristo uses a unique, experimental “fusion fiction” style—a hybrid of prose and poetry with minimal punctuation—that mirrors the rhythmic flow of thought and speech. Together, these stories form a “choral love song” to modern Britain, exploring what it means to be “othered” and the resilience required to find a sense of home.
