This definitive biography offers a fresh and deeply researched portrait of the man behind James Bond, moving beyond the preening myths to reveal a more sympathetic and substantial figure. Utilizing unprecedented access to the Fleming family papers, Shakespeare explores Ian’s complex childhood, his dramatic career in Naval Intelligence, and the tragic aspects of his personal life. The book illustrates how Fleming’s real-world experiences provided the rich inspiration for his iconic fiction while painting a vivid picture of post-Empire Britain. It is a masterful record of a man who strove to be “the complete man” but remained as mysterious as his own creation.
