Description
Set in London during the lead-up to the 2016 Brexit referendum, the story follows Lucy, a 42-year-old white schoolteacher and mother of two who is navigating a messy separation from her husband. Lucy has always followed the “script”: she married a man just like her—same age, same background, same education—and it made her miserable. While looking for a babysitter at a local butcher shop, she meets Joseph, a 22-year-old Black man who works several part-time jobs and dreams of being a DJ. On paper, they are opposites in every way: age, race, class, and even their politics regarding the referendum. However, as they begin an unlikely relationship, they have to navigate the social friction of a divided Britain and decide if “common ground” is more important than being “just like” someone else.
