Description
Thomas is a “seascraper” (or shanker), plying an almost obsolete trade passed down from his grandfather. Every morning, he takes his horse and cart into the treacherous grey tides to scrape for shrimp. His life is defined by the “salt and scum” of manual labor and the responsibility of supporting his mother. Secretly, however, Thomas is a folk musician who rehearses songs on his guitar in private. When a charismatic American film director, Edgar Acheson, arrives looking for a “gloomily beautiful” filming location, Thomas is offered a glimpse of a Hollywood life far beyond the horizon—but he must decide if the American’s promises are true or merely another mirage on the water.
