This 1895 classic of weird fiction is a collection of ten stories linked by a recurring, malevolent motif: a forbidden play that induces madness or despair in anyone who reads it. The first half of the book features groundbreaking tales of supernatural horror and “decadent” dread, introducing the haunting Yellow Sign and the mysterious, ancient city of Carcosa. From a dystopian, alternate-history New York to the bohemian streets of Paris, these narratives explore the thin veil between reality and a terrifying, “unutterable” revelation.

Robert W. Chambers (1865 - 1933) was born in Brooklyn, New York. Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Chambers enthralled readers with his strange and supernatural stories, most notably in his defining collection, The King in Yellow. Lovecraft and Stephen King, and has proved to be a defining voice in Weird Fiction.
