Description
Arguably the most influential political novel of the 20th century, 1984 is the ultimate warning against totalitarianism. Set in a grey, crumbling London (now known as Airstrip One in the superstate of Oceania), the story follows Winston Smith, a minor Party official who works at the Ministry of Truth. His job is to rewrite history to ensure it always aligns with the current Party line.
Winston is secretly a rebel, hating the omnipresent “Big Brother” and the Thought Police who monitor every move through two-way “telescreens.” When he begins an illicit affair with a woman named Julia and starts writing a secret diary, he sets himself on a collision course with the Inner Party, specifically the high-ranking official O’Brien. The novel is a terrifying exploration of how language (Newspeak), surveillance, and the manipulation of truth can be used to destroy the human spirit and ensure absolute, eternal power.
